About ReikiEma Hi - I'm Ema - founder of ReikiEma, Holistic Practitioner and Teacher. I'm a geeky human, with a passion for learning, self-development, holistic and complementary therapies, and helping people (human and other species) to live their best lives! Why I became "ReikiEma" When I first came to Reiki, my life was on a very different trajectory indeed! I was a passionate Project Manager in the Civil Service - having worked, studied and applied myself above and beyond to get there, for around a decade. Backtracking for a moment though, let's flash back to little Ema and where my path really began! I'd always had a strong sense of connection to nature, spirituality, creativity, and the flow of the Universe. This manifested, in my love of Yoga, studying Taoism, and my earlier fascination as a child, with things like telepathy and developing special abilities. After hitting my teenage years, I directed all of this into enjoying aromatherapy, holistic treatments and herbalism, as well as my love of learning about other cultures. My life's path brought me through some very unusual and difficult traumatic times, and there was more than one occasion where I was faced with the decision of abandoning my inner light and soul, to keep the status quo, or to speak out and advocate for myself, to live with integrity and be brave enough to start again. This proved to be needed again, in 2018, when I became ill, due to circumstances around that dream job I'd attained. I had a very dark time, and my life shattered, for a time. I needed to rebuild my life again, from the ground up, and I also needed to heal, so that I could rebuild on a firm foundation. Whilst I was in the early stages of recovery, my then partner suggested/pushed me to having my Reiki attunement. I'd received Reiki as part of a treatment, a year earlier, and since then I'd wanted to receive attunement to Reiki, as I felt drawn to it. So that was just what I did! I knew nothing about Reiki at that point, and information online was incredibly confusing and contradictory. Also, for a down-to-earth person like me, it all felt a bit ungrounded for me to have much confidence in it. But I knew it worked and was real, so I looked for a local teacher I could afford, and who had good reviews. I figured that I could find my own way, once I was on the path and attuned to Reiki. So I got attuned, and my life turned upside down, overnight! I began to heal in ways I hadn't realised were possible, and I began to realise things about the big questions of life, which I hadn't realised either. Reiki opened my eyes and my experience, and it led the way for me. I also had a big realisation about how my life needed to go from that point on. I needed to prioritise my own sense of happiness, care and nourishment - what brings me joy needed to come centre stage - whether or not I believed that it was "practical" or "realistic" and no matter what anyone else said. I wanted to build my own holistic practice, and having tried Shiatsu as well, and also being passionate about Herbalism, I gravitated towards those more "traditional" and more secularly-founded fields of study. Herbalism turned out not to be viable for me, but Shiatsu just about was - despite a lengthy 3 year diploma. So I paired that with a Reiki CNHC diploma, as that allowed me to work at the professional level before I achieved the diploma. As a good Project Manager, I planned out my new business, in the short and longer-terms. I found a great teacher in Ann Singleton, and re-started my Reiki studies with her - re-taking level 1 with her as part of her diploma course, and going on to complete level 2 (the professional level) a few months later- getting my certificate in January 2020. I had already bought my website and had been writing articles on the blog - ReikiEma sounded good to me, and I felt inspired to go with that. It was around that time that I discovered my first name "Ema" has another connection to Reiki - in Shinto and at Buddhist shrines, they are the small wooden plaques with prayers/wishes/requests written on them, for the Kami (or gods). Originally, these wishes/prayers would be carried by horses to the Kami - they were seen as messengers. So ReikiEma seems to have a rather lovely double-meaning! This was how ReikiEma began - and its journey from then has been largely directed by the Universe - by Reiki, and my soul - which can be scary as heck!! But thankfully I'm still here on my path, always grateful, and so privileged to have this calling, and to be able to help people and animals, to empower and teach, to offer healing, to share and form community. I take my responsibility as a Reiki Master Teacher, a Meditation Teacher, and a healer very seriously. This is not something I fell into, or took as an easy way to go - that really is not my way. Professional Standards, trustworthiness, integrity and personal responsibility are at the heart of who I am and of what I do. And this is something I have found, seems to shine, and draws the people I'm right for, to find me and my services. How & where I work: Holistic treatments & other client services I offer my clients treatments at locations to suit their individual circumstances and changing needs. Currently I'm able to offer treatments at clinic locations across St Helens, Warrington and Wigan. I'm also fully mobile, so provided there aren't lots of stairs to climb, I offer my clients the option of home visits. This is particularly popular for my pregnancy massage clients, and for those with mobility or sensory needs - but this option does also offer the advantage of a slightly lower rate (depending on distance) as well as the fact that my clients can relax and bask in the post-treatment glow, without the need for a rude awakening during the travel back, afterwards. Home visits are standard for my Animal Reiki clients. This is because when they are in a familiar home/stable environment, this usually means that they'll get the most benefit from their treatment. For some of my therapies (including Animal Reiki), I offer a remote treatment option. This typically begins with a consultation on audio or video, or if preferred, by text. Once we've covered the essentials, and agreed on any goals or intentions, the call ends, you find a safe, quiet place to lie down comfortably, undisturbed for the duration of your treatment, and I get to work. Afterwards, I let you know that the treatment has concluded, by text message, and we can either have a post-treatment conversation then, or by arrangement if you'd like a day or two to allow the treatment to take effect, and settle. Working with other professionals/organisations As well as working with individuals, I also reach and help people through my work with several organisations. I've done this in a range of ways: helping support wellbeing and/or recovery, through treatments, wellbeing workshops, demonstrating and sharing knowledge on different tools and techniques, to help empower people in developing their own personal self-care and self-treatment regime. I am also an experienced public speaker, and can offer workshops, demonstrations and wellbeing resources and reference materials at events. I'm proud to have worked with: The UK Reiki Federation (of which I'm a Member): as a regular speaker on their Wellbeing Webinar sessions I run self-healing and Reiki technique tutorial/practice sessions monthly, and I've spoken at the last two UK Reiki Federation Annual Conferences ). Warrington Carers' Hub (with their Young Carers and adult carers); Warrington Halton & St. Helens' RSPCA animal centre; Warrington Jobcentre (a Reiki talk/demonstration at their staff wellbeing meeting); Warrington Jobcentre's Health Support Fairs; Bents Garden Centre (Animal Reiki during their "BarkFest" Event weekend); Women's Institute (Birchwood Branch); Thrive event (for survivors of high-demand religions); University of Chester (proposing, and working on, a study looking into the behavioural effects of Animal Reiki on several of the resident dogs at the centre). Warrington Disability Awareness Day 2024 (Walton Gardens)- where I unveiled my new Reiki Gazebo MacIntyre's Apple Day 2024 (in the New Routes Community Orchard ) Strong Girls' Club NorthWest Sam's Diamonds Cancer Support Charity's Northwest Wellbeing & Cancer Care Conference, St Helens Volunteering and advocating for Reiki I'm also honoured to be a member of the UK Reiki Federation's Research Group (since 2024). This does mean a lot of commitment and work, but I'm willing to do that, as it really aligns with my ongoing efforts at helping to build awareness and public trust, and by doing this, to help build the credibility of the Reiki profession in the UK - and in the wider world! This is, I believe, much needed work, to help remove blockers to Reiki being even more widely accepted, acknowledged and integrated into mainstream services, so that it can have the maximum opportunity to help improve lives. Reiki is so accessible and safe - and it can help alleviate suffering and improve the quality of live for so many. That's what I want to see, and that's what my driving mission is - to help make accessible, better wellbeing for everyone - no exceptions! When Reiki came into my life, it was like coming home. And after my first Reiki 1 attunement, I realised that there was another way for me to help people to achieve positive change - one which was on a much deeper level, and would be better for my wellbeing, as well as making a more meaningful impact for the people I helped. So I took the scary decision to step away from the Public Sector Senior Project Management role I had worked most of a decade to attain, and took the brave leap into training from scratch as a Holistic Practitioner! I do still have my Project Management and business knowhow to help me succeed, for which I'm extremely grateful. No learning or experience is ever a waste of time, where Reiki's concerned! I'm so blessed to do what makes my heart happy, and to help people discover the powerful, moving, wonder of Reiki and the other therapies I offer. I founded ReikiEma in early 2020, as soon as I qualified as a professional Reiki practitioner - and despite my (arguably questionable) timing, I'm still very much here - being tenacious, flexible and creative. Being creative is something I've always thrived on - finding new ways to take my work forward, supporting and helping others (and myself, too)! I'm now a qualified, experienced Reiki Master Teacher and CNHC practitioner, offering treatments and Reiki courses in the North-west of England. I also started volunteering during lockdown. It is really important for me, my wellbeing and ethos to give back, and to help causes I'm passionate about. It's my dream to be able to do more of this, in the future, as I build my business; - and it's my hope to someday found a Reiki School / Animal Sanctuary/Rescue, combined with a residential Animal Reiki school and healing volunteering retreat centre for humans! Having given Reiki to many of the animals at my local RSPCA centre as a volunteer, during lockdown, I realised that working with other species is a huge part of my calling. The accreditation requirements were reassuringly rigorous, and involved an application form, competency questions, submission of case studies and sending in in certification and Animal Reiki professional Insurance for verification and validation. As one of their certified Animal Reiki Practitioners, Ema Melanaphy appears on the UK Reiki Federation's Searchable directory for Animal Reiki Practitioners, which you can access here . This certificate was awarded to Ema after completion of the first year of a 3-year Shiatsu Diploma course (which took 2 years, due to the pandemic preventing normal teaching and practice treatments during the lockdowns and Social restriction rules. Animal Reiki Terms & Conditions Owner Statement I understand that a Reiki session for animals with Ema Melanaphy does not replace veterinary advice, expertise or treatment. Should the animal receiving Reiki become ill or injured at any time between now and completion of this course of Animal Reiki treatments, I will inform my vet and Ema Melanaphy. If the animal receiving Reiki is currently being treated/under observation by a veterinary practitioner I have been advised to inform them that my animal is receiving Reiki energy-work from Ema Melanaphy. I understand that an animal Reiki session will be at the rate quoted on the website at the time of booking, per hour/session. I have read and agree to the terms of the Cancellation and Privacy Policies (below). Cancellation Policy Cancellations made prior to 2 days before an appointment will be refunded in full. Cancellations between 24-48 hours prior to an appointment will receive a 50% refund. ReikiEma's heartwarming journey and involvement as a holistic therapist volunteering with Reiki at the RSPCA and Reiki Medic-Care. Volunteering My Animal Reiki Story - from RSPCA volunteer to Accredited Professional 2020 was a memorable year, to say the least! For me, it was the year that I started to volunteer with the RSPCA, and that was definitely life-changing in its own right! I am passionate about animal welfare (and a big softie), and so I decided to foster a cat in need of a safe, loving home! Shortly after Tiggs (pictured with me on the right) came home with me, I started to notice a remarkable change in his behaviour when I gave him Reiki! He would become physically relaxed lie down and get a very blissed out look - there would also be purring and some kitten-like rolling around on the floor! Not only that, but Tiggs' overall emotional state and wellbeing levels started to change too. He went from being a highly stressed, hyper-vigilant boy (who would jump at the slightest noise, and cower if he accidentally knocked something over or caught me with a claw in play) to a chilled-out elegant lounge-lizard, stretching out on his favourite radiator or window-sill! Don't get me wrong - Tiggs still gets stressed at times, but his general demeanour and emotional resilience have improved so much - he's like a different boy! So of course I offered the RSPCA my services as a volunteer, to come in and give Reiki to some more of the RSPCA's residents! It had helped my Tiggs so much, and I wanted to help as many animals in need as I possibly could. Fast forward to today: I'm now a qualified Animal Reiki therapist, accredited by the UK Reiki Federation. My time working with the animals at the RSPCA has taught me so much, and introduced me to connecting with, empowering and healing beautiful, gentle souls who were carrying the scars of trauma, abuse and physical issues. It was heart-breaking at times, but the animals' amazing resilience and desire to trust again is so strong - they're my heroes! I love them all, and they inspire me to do my best to promote Animal Reiki, and teach animal Reiki to more people. (In case anyone was wondering, Tiggs is a foster fail!) Ema has been volunteering with her services for the RSPCA Warrington, Halton & St Helens branch for a while now and the change's she has made are remarkable! Ema is always so calm, understanding and patient with the animals. She is always asking about different ways each animal prefers to receive Reiki and is extremely adaptable to suit each animal's needs. Most of the animals which come into our care have suffered abuse or neglect which Ema show's true compassion towards. Ema's knowledge and skill set is such a fantastic asset to have at our branch. We are all immensely grateful for the time and commitment Ema give's and would 100% recommend her service to anyone and any animal which needs additional help/support. I should mention that when I first met him, D was an incredibly skittish, fearful boy who shied away from my hands and kept trying to hide behind me. From one extreme to the other!
